Umea Pike fishing
We are located in the village of Skivsjo in the county of Vasterbotten in Northern Sweden.
We are one hours drive from the city of Umea and its airport; 20 minutes drive from the town of Vindeln and 45 minutes from Lycksele in Lapland.
We are taking bookings for fishing holidays in 2019 starting on Sunday 19th May and finishing on Monday 14th October. That allows for 21 weeks of fishing; when the lake is free from ice.
We offer week long holidays and shorter stays staying in our lakeside caravan.

Angling pressure is basically zero. The fish are wild and untouched. You are unlikely to encounter anyone else out on the water. Except for the fantastic wildlife ranging from ducks and geese to eagles and hawks. Maybe even a moose, beaver, bear, lynx or reindeer.
We moved here in January 2018. I had instant fishing success, so for 2019 I offer you the chance to explore what the lake on our doorstep holds. The potential of the lake is waiting to be discovered.
Plentiful supplies of snack sized food means that the predators grow big in Sweden.
A sensible start is to use a bait resembling them.
The results speak for themselves. Our local waters offer lots of action in a short space of time. The catch rate is usually hectic! These fish were all caught on our doorstep, providing the opportunity for Kristin to photograph them. I have caught many other monsters while fishing alone in the lakes further reaches.
WE PRACTICE A 100% CATCH AND RELEASE POLICY ON ALL FISH.
Your accommodation is beside Skivsjo lake. The caravan is a few steps from the boat and the lakeside seating area. Drink your morning coffee lakeside, board the boat and fish for a few hours then pop back for lunch…….the choice is yours. Come and go as you wish. Bliss.
We fish Skivsjo Lake and nearby lakes and rivers.
Skivsjo lake is 8km long and 900 Ha in size. The margins are either fringed with reed or edged with large boulders leading to ancient pine forest. Depths fluctuate across the lake with deep holes and trenches reaching over 40 feet (13 metres). In general the shallow lake margins offer a depth of 3 feet (1 metre) while the central body of water is around 13 to 16 feet (4 to 5 metre).
The lake offers fantastic features to fish amongst. A plethora of sunken trees, islands, reedbeds, huge underwater boulders and buoys (to which you can anchor and fish statically from) abound in the lake.
The water is clear, affording good subsurface visibility. It holds a slight copper tinge from decaying leaves and wood.
The lake bed is generally free from snags. It is rare to snag and lose a lure on a subsurface object. The fish finder indicates weed beds, sunken trees and balls of leaf matter that can hold in deep holes. This affords you time to maneuver your baits accordingly.
The lake holds pike, with a terrific number being a metre long and weighing in the 13 lb to 22 lb category (6 kg to 10 kg). Naturally, the more of them you catch inevitably the upper 20 lb and into 30 lb (14 kg) fish become a real possibility. It is possible to catch pike over 120cm long.
The perch average 3/4 lb (340 g) but are a real star attraction in that they have been caught at over 6 lbs (2.8 kg) in Spring when spawn laden.
Burbot take bottom baits. Twitched jigs and full/part roach or herring baits. They remain unfished for by the locals (who concentrate on pike and perch) and so have grown very big. They were declared extinct in the United Kingdom in 1972. Your dream to catch a fish the UK lost can come true here. The Swedish record stands at 18.74 lb (8.5 kg). Our lakes offer a wide range of Burbot skin colour morphs and patterns in shades of yellow, cream, brown, grey and black. We catch a lot of Burbot in the 3kg to 6kg range and bigger! They tend to be very docile on the unhooking mat.
Together with the healthy populations of Roach (Rutilus rutilus), Bream (Abramis brama), Pike, Perch, Eels and Burbot in the lake numerous other species can enter from adjacent lakes, the Umea River and ultimately the sea. All are interconnected by waterways.
Zander (Sander lucioperca), Brown Trout (Salmo trutta), Ide (Leuciscus idus) or various species of whitefish can enter the lake.
The website www.ifiske.se gives a nice presentation of photos and descriptions of the freshwater fish species here.
A short walk away in our forest flows a narrow river connecting to Skivsjo lake. You can fish here. The river can be very productive for catching pike and very large bream. You will be fishing in the company of resident Beaver and passing Moose. You stand a good chance of spotting owls, hawks and eagles here.
Other species you may be familiar with are Common Bleak (Alburnus alburnus), Eurasian Ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua), Vendace (Coregonus albula), Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and Crucian Carp (Carassius carassius).
I have named areas in the lake where I have had reliable success in catching big predators:
The Hole. As the name suggests an undulating area of 13 to 17 ft deep that has a notable hole dropping to 24 feet (7.3 m). It is a rewarding spot for pike usually in the 8 lb to 16 lb (7.2 kg) category…….will you get one bigger?
Sunken Tree. A couple of large pine trees felled from the adjacent island now harbour huge perch. Naturally, a savage pike take materialises sooner or later. But the sheer size of the perch is the draw here.
Early season. While the water levels are high early in the season the roach frequent the shallows and reeds near the caravan. Big pike and perch follow them. This is visual fishing, as the hungry predators chase bait fish and thrash at your lure. This is when you can catch them standing lakeside.
Paradise. My favourite. Sandwiched between an island and the edge of the lake this place puts a smile on my face time after time. Hoards of perch eager to be caught and then all goes calm……the big pike arrive. Fun Fun Fun. This spot constantly produces trophy pike well over 1m long and 20lb (9kg) in weight.
Elsewhere…….I have only fished a fraction of this vast lake. What can you find in the virgin water?
The huge size of the lake means that fishing is most effective by boat.
Our boat is an aluminium Oskwig pike, purchased new in 2018 and specifically designed for predator fishing.
The boat has a shallow hull perfect for stalking in the margins or docking in the shallows. Its flat floor makes for comfortable standing.
At 4.3 m long and 1.75 m wide it affords spacious fishing for a maximum of four fisherman or a combined total weight of 417 kg.
Weighing under 100 kg means that it is easy to launch and beach the boat.
The maximum number of paying fishing guests is set at 3 adults. That means there is space for me to guide you as the fourth passenger. On days when you fish unguided you have lots of extra room to fish.
Two padded chairs with backrests are available to affix to the boat. Otherwise, you can sit lower to water level at the rear, in the middle or at the front of the boat while trolling or casting lures.
Maggots and worms can be purchased from a shop 15 minutes drive away, if you are interested in catching the silver fish (some species of which are not present in UK waters). They also offer a small selection of lines, lures and hooks. There is also a very nice restaurant along the same road.
The footage shows about half of the total lake.
We are located within a 15 minute drive from the Vindeln River UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
